Bars March was established back in 2010 to encourage people to support their local hotels and venues. In turn, these pubs donate part of their profits to animal charities. Since that time, more than $90,000 has been raised for various animal charities.
In 2020, money raised will be donated to Animal Welfare League NSW.
According to its website, the Animal Welfare League NSW has been supporting neglected and abandoned animals of all size and shape for more than 60 years.
And given Australia’s devastating bushfires this summer, more animals than ever are in desperate need of support and assistance. This work takes many forms, including from the charity’s mobile vet service.
This year, Bars March also has some extra support with some big name brand ambassadors. Among them are celebrity vet and TV presenter Dr Katrina Warren and renowned garden guru Jamie Durie.
Pints 4 Paws
The Erskineville Hotel in Sydney’s inner west is one of dozens of venues around Australia to be participating this year.
It hosted a launch party on Sunday (1 March) under the theme Pints 4 Paws campaign as part of Bars March. This is its third year participating in Bars March. The pub has pledged to donate $1 from every pint of 4 Pines beer sold on the day.
“The Erko has a very strong relationship with our local community,” the hotel’s management told Paws N’ All.
“The Erko is already a well-known dog-friendly venue, and we have hosted a number of dog events in the past. We are always ready to host our four-legged guests.”
So what exactly did the launch party offer for its patrons – both two and four-legged?
“Along with offering free puppy portraits on the day, we also had a special dog menu and $10 Pint 4 Pines (with $1 of every sale going to AWL),” the popular pub said.
While it is still counting out the total takings from Sunday’s launch, the Erskineville Hotel said it’s proud to be raising money for the Animal Welfare League. Yet it also wants to keep building greater awareness of the charity’s activities.
Not all venues in Bars March welcome dogs on-site
The Erskineville Hotel is proud of its dog-friendly status. However, not all of the venues that participate are able to accommodate dogs on site.
But even so, they are still wanting to do their part to support animals in need. That’s according to Bars March founder Amy Cooper.
“While some of our participating venues welcome dogs and others are human-only, each one supports the cause. And each represents the dog-loving spirit of Bars March- a celebration of communities joining to eat, drink and connect in their favourite locals,” she said.
“All our venues serve amazing drinks made by talented staff in inviting surroundings. We urge everyone to check out the list on our website and head to these big-hearted venues in support of the doggos for Bars March 2020!”
So what do dog lovers like to drink?
And in case you’re wondering, there’s not much separating dog lovers from other pub goers in terms of their favourite drink.
“Over 90 per cent of our guests visit with their pups. While beer is the most popular drink of choice at The Erko, our guests like to surprise us from time to time. For example, a gentleman came in with his pup one afternoon and he ordered a margarita!” the hotel said.
